Full Moon Names

There are (usually) 12 full Moons throughout the year, each one with a specific name assigned to it. Today we will be exploring what each name is and why it has been given to that full Moon. Each full Moon will also have a zodiac sign associated with it. There are different phases of the Moon, (Waxing Crescent, Waning Gibbous) but today is solely focussed on the full Moon.

January - Wolf Moon

Last night (17th January) was 2022's Wolf Moon. The Wolf Moon has its name, as legends say that this was when wolves were most likely to be heard howling. This full Moon is said to allow for a time of transformation and observation. It is a time to think about what you need in order to live a happy life. This year's Wolf Moon is in the zodiac sign Cancer.


February - Snow Moon

The reason behind the name of the Snow Moon isn't as interesting as the rest! In the 1760s, the Snow Moon got its name because it was said that it was more common for snow to fall during this month than any other in the winter. This full moon wants us to get in touch with our spiritual side and try to figure out our purpose for right now. This year's Snow Moon is in the zodiac sign Leo and will be on the 16th February.


March - Worm Moon

The Worm Moon got its name, as this is when earthworms appear as the soil begins to get warmer for the spring. This full Moon wants you to remember that this is your life and you can make whatever you want out of it. You have a bright soul and a unique personality. This year's Worm Moon is in the zodiac sign Libra and will be on the 18th March.


April - Pink Moon

The Pink Moon got its name because of the early springtime blooms of pink wildflowers in eastern North America. This full Moon is all about starting fresh. Set new resolutions for yourself now that you're well into 2022. Release any negative thoughts that are holding you back. This year's Pink Moon is in the zodiac sign Libra and will be on the 16th April.


May - Flower Moon

The Flower Moon got its name because this is when flowers really start to bloom in abundance. This full Moon wants us to be kinder to ourselves in order to get to know who we are. It wants us to evolve as people and expand our knowledge. It's ok not to be ok and you're time to bloom will come. This year's Flower Moon is in the zodiac sign Sagittarius and will be on the 16th May.


June - Strawberry Moon

The Strawberry Moon got its name, as this was when Native American tribes would gather ripening strawberries. This full Moon wants us to be the main character of our own story. Manifest what you want and write down your goals. Love is also a theme with this Moon, so look out for romance. This year's Strawberry Moon is in the zodiac sign Sagittarius and will be on the 14th June.


July - Buck Moon

The Buck Moon got its name because the antlers of male deer (bucks) are in full-growth mode at this time of the year. This full Moon is all about intentions. Set a structure that works best for you, especially if it connects with your home life. If you can, stay at home and rest as much as possible. This year's Buck Moon is in the zodiac sign Capricorn and will be on the 13th July.


August - Sturgeon Moon

The Sturgeon Moon got its name as it welcomes the coming harvest and how easily the sturgeon and other freshwater fish were caught at the end of summer. This full Moon wants us to be grateful for all that we have. Go with the flow and embrace the beauty that this world has to offer. This year's Sturgeon Moon is in the zodiac sign Aquarius and will be on the 12th August.


September - Full Corn Moon

The Full Corn Moon got its name as it signalled the time of year for farmers to start harvesting their crops before the autumn frosts. This full Moon wants us to speak our truth. Be compassionate with your own needs as well as other people's and embrace your spiritual side. This year's Full Corn Moon is in the zodiac sign Pisces and will be on the 10th September.


October - Hunter's Moon

The reason behind the Hunter's Moon's name, is that it was the time of the year for hunting, to prepare for the cold. This full Moon wants us to focus on our most important relationships. Romance will be in the air, so make sure to embrace the Venus energy surrounding you. This year's Hunter's Moon is in the zodiac sign Aries and will be on the 9th October.


November - Beaver Moon

There are two reasons behind the name of the Beaver Moon. First, this was the time of year to set traps to guarantee a good supply of furs for the winter. Second, this was the time of year that beavers were most active in preparation for winter. This full Moon is all about destiny. This year's Beaver Moon is in the zodiac sign Taurus and will be on the 8th November (and it's also a total lunar eclipse!).


December - Cold Moon

The name of the Cold Moon reflects the temperature during the dead of winter as it starts to get cold. This full Moon wants us to be present and observe our surroundings. Try to find the warmth that gets you through the cold times. Connect with the people and things that truly matter. This year's Cold Moon is in the zodiac sign Gemini and will be on the 7th December.
